Our Lady of Grace Parish and School

Our Lady of Grace School opened in 1960 with grades one through four, comprising 105 students. A new grade was added each year from 1961 through 1965, with the first Kindergarten class beginning in 1975. Our Lady of Grace offers the opportunities for academic excellence to all the children of our community. Located in the charming Southport area of West Sacramento, is a tranquil and happy campus where children in grades kindergarten through eighth are educated as scholars, as spiritual children of God and as successful future members of our society. The school serves 120 boys and 139 girls from families who live in the surrounding areas.

The school is an educational ministry of Our Lady of Grace Parish, also in West Sacramento, and collaboratively the school and church assist parents in educating Our Lady of Grace children.

The school is one of 44 Catholic elementary schools in the Sacramento Diocese and is fully accredited by the Western Association of Colleges and Schools as well as the Western Catholic Educational Association. Father Nicholas Ho, pastor of Our Lady of Grace parish, is the Chief Administrator of the school. Mr. Joshua Rucker resides as Principal and Executive Officer of the Advisory Commission. The Advisory Commission of Our Lady of Grace School provides direction for the school through policy-making decisions, financial guidance, and support to the administration.

The staff consists of ten full-time lay classroom teachers, a full-time physical education teacher, many part-time primary teacher aides, a part-time art docent, a part-time music teacher, a full-time custodian, a secretary, an administrative assistant, and an extended daycare director.

At OLG our philosophy of educating the whole child is realized through a strong spiritual foundation that nurtures individual self-worth, respect, and discipline. Our students and faculty start every day with prayer. They participate fully in the Liturgy and attend Mass regularly. After extensive preparation, students may receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation. Our Lady of Grace School recognizes the importance of family and encourages the modeling of Gospel values.

Throughout the year, students, faculty, and parents attend monthly liturgical services at the school. Our students are also encouraged to participate in community service projects throughout the year which enable them to give back to others in their own community. Often, these services are preceded by community food, clothing, and toy drives that focus on the many blessings that are bestowed upon us. These collections also serve to empower our school community and graphically illustrate that every person can make a difference in the world.

Our school has a long-standing tradition of family involvement. Many of our students are children of alumni. Upon entering the OLG campus one immediately feels the warmth and spirit generated by this family atmosphere. Our Lady of Grace is truly a special place for learning and growing.

Our Lady of Grace School has a long history of academic excellence with a large number of its graduates attending and succeeding in the highly competitive Catholic high schools of the Sacramento area. Our Lady of Grace students also continue on to become active members of the community. In 2000, West Sacramento elected an OLG alumnus to be its mayor. OLG is blessed with a strong, supportive community both on and off campus. Dedicated faculty, parents, and students have established a history of quality education within the community.

The school’s mission is to provide students with the opportunities for academic excellence and the necessary foundation to become successful members of our society. One way that Our Lady of Grace School defines success is in the ability to give back to a community. Our school strives to instill in each student a strong perception of self-worth and respect. Students are taught at an early age that giving of themselves in service, whether through time, physical efforts, creative abilities, or emotional support, is a true expression of Gospel values. A high quality educational experience is recognized in the community as an OLG tradition.
